LESSON 10. Welcome to Asia
Reading
Welcome to Asia
Look at this map. How many countries in Asia can you name? Asia is a very large continent and is home to more than half the world's people. Asian countries have long histories and great cultural variety. There are many natural and man-made wonders.
For example, the Great Wall of China is the largest structure ever built. This 2,400-kilometer wall can be seen ever from space. The Chinese people built the wall over two thousand years ago to protect themselves from their enemies.
Another man-made wonder is the Taj Mahal located in Agra, India. This beautiful tomb was built by an emperor in memory of his wife. It took 200,000 workers about twenty years to build it. many people think it is the world's most beautiful building.
The earth's highest and lowest points are in Asia. Mr. Everest, in the Himalaya Mountains, is the world's highest. These high mountains are sometimes called "the roof of the world." The lowest point is on the border between Israel and Jordan near the Dead Sea.
There are some differences among Asian people. For example, the hill people of Malaysia have customs different from those of the city people of Korea. Arabic people eat with their hands. East Asian people use chopsticks.
But there are many similarities, too. One similarity is that most Asian countries are changing rapidly. Cities are growing as people leave the countryside and flock to the cities. Most Asian economies are growing fast, too. In fact the economy of Asia is developing faster than any other economy in the world.
As Asia becomes increasingly important, it is necessary for Asian people to work together for peace and progress. If they cooperate with each other, it is certain that they can make the world a better place.
We must all learn to live together in peace and harmony. There is nothing more important than that.
