Lesson 1. When I Grow Up

 

(The students are speaking about their future at a speech contest.)

Good morning, everyone. My name is Yi In-suk. I'd like to talk to you about my plans for the future.

I think being the captain of a ship would be exciting. A ship's captain can go all over the world and see many interesting things.

Also, I love the sea. Last summer when I went to Chejudo, I saw a beautiful sunset from the ship. I will never forget it. I hope I can be the first female captain in Korea. Thank you.

 

Hi, everyone. My name is Kim Min-gi. I'm happy to have a chance to talk about my dreams for the future. My dream is to be a computer programmer.

We are living in the "Information Age." Computers are becoming more and more necessary in our society. I think computer programming will be a good job in the future. I like math and I especially enjoy using a computer. my older brother has a computer and he lets me use it sometimes. One day he taught me how to make an easy program. It was fun ! It was almost like a game.

I will study hard and learn all about computers. Someday I will be a good computer programmer. Thank you.

 

Hello, I'm Cho Mi-sun. Let me tell you what I want to be when I be when I grow up. I want to be a nurse. I like helping people and I want to be a good nurse. I will make sick people comfortable and make them feel better. And I will help them get well faster.

Last winter I was in the hospital. The nurses were very kind to me. They helped me get well quickly.

I must learn many things in order to be a good nurse. I will work hard and do my best in school. And I will always remember the kind nurses who took care of me. Thank you.

 

My fellow classmates, I'm Han Ch'ang-su. I'm glad to talk about my plans for the future. Perhaps you will be surprised when I tell you my plan. my grandfather is a carpenter but not an ordinary one. He's a national living treasure. He makes beautiful cabinets out of seashells.

He wanted one of his children to become a cabinet maker, but none of them was interested. However I am very interested. I'd like to be just like him. My grandfather says if I start learning now, I can reach my goal someday. Thank you for listening.

Ch'ang-su : Hi ! It's a long time since I saw you last.

Sang-ho : Hi, Ch'ang-su. What have you been doing lately?

Ch'ang-su : During the vacation I visited my grandparents' house.

Sang-ho : What did you do?

Ch'ang-su : I helped my grandfather. He's really a great carpenter. I'd like to be just like him someday.

In-suk : This is In-suk. May I speak to Yu-mi?

Yu-ho : I'm not sure whether she is home or not. Hold on, please.

Yu-ho : I'm sorry she's not here.

In-suk : I heard her poem won the first prize.

Yu-ho : Yes. She's very excited.

In-suk : I read the poem and I really liked it. She will be a famous poet.

Yu-ho : Thank you. Shall I give her a message?

In-suk : Please tell her that I'll call again.
