Waste Not, Want Not

 

Every year In-suk's neighbors hold a big bazaar. It was started by a young mother. She wanted to buy books for her children. The books were so expensive that she could only buy a few. She thought a bazaar would help people reuse things. She told her neighbors about the idea.

All the mothers believed it was a good plan. In-suk's mother said, "People waste too much. We must learn to save things." Yu-mi's mother said, "Buying things at the bazaar is a good way to save money."

This year the bazaar was held at In-suk's school. Everyone worked very hard for a month preparing for the bazaar.

Students asked people to give them things they weren't using any more. They collected clothes, books, toys, and even a TV set. They made posters and put them on the walls nearby. In-suk's father and In-ho helped to write price tags and put them on everything.

The evening before the bazaar they set up tables. Finally everything was ready.

The bazaar opened at 10 in the morning. Many people came early to find bargains. The big room was crowded and noisy. In the corner of the room fathers were serving free drinks to people.

In-suk and her mother worked at the book table. They were selling old books. There were many nice books. Many of them were children's books, but there were other kinds, too. Everyone was happy because the books didn't cost much.

In-suk was very busy all day, but she found time to do some shopping. She wanted a pair of ice skates.

In-suk found a nice pair of skates, but they were too small.

"Don't you have another pair?" she asked. "I'm sorry," the woman said, "You're too late. They're all gone." In-suk was disappointed. But there were many other interesting things for sale. In-suk bought a warm sweater for her grand-mother and a radio for In-ho.

That evening In-suk gave the presents to In-ho and Grandmother. Then In-suk's mother handed her a sack. There were ice skates in it. In-suk was very pleased, and said, "Thank you, Mother!"

 

 

Dialogue 1

마이크와 인숙이가 바자회에 대해 이야기를 나누고 있다.

 

Mike : Hi, In-suk. How was the bazaar?

In-suk : It was great. We made lots of money, and helped poor people with it.

Mike : I'm so happy to hear that.

What did you do at the bazaar?

In-suk : I helped my mother sell books.

Mike : Was it fun?

In-suk : Yes, but when the bazaar was over, we were too tired to stand.

 

Dialogue 2

인숙이가 옷 가게에서 옷을 고르고 있다.

 

Woman : May I help you?

In-suk : Yes, please. I'm looking for a skirt.

Woman : Here's a nice one.

In-suk : May I try it on?

Woman : Sure. Come this way.

Woman : How is it?

In-suk : It's too small. Is there another size?
